Legislative Report
May 6, 2026
Momentum continues to build across our province as the economy grows, services expand, and key supports strengthen for families and communities. Our government remains focused on stability, opportunity, and strong outcomes for residents.
Economic performance remains strong. Saskatchewan’s GDP reached $85.4 billion in 2025, the highest level in our history. This reflects broad strength across major sectors and continued confidence from investors. Competitive taxes, responsible fiscal management, and expanding trade opportunities are helping attract new projects and create jobs. With rising exports and strong private-sector investment, our province is well-positioned for sustained growth. We remain committed to supporting key industries and keeping Saskatchewan one of the best places to live, work, and invest.
Thanks to our strong and growing economy, we can invest in things that matter most to people like healthcare. Saskatchewan is training more physicians to support a growing and sustainable health care workforce. In 2026-27, our government is investing $4.3 million to add 20 new seats in the Undergraduate Medical Education program at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine. An additional $1.75 million will also fund 10 new medical residency positions. We are proud to invest in these additional opportunities to ensure more Saskatchewan students can study and build their practices here at home. To learn more about the program, visit the U of S Undergraduate MD Program web page.
Our government’s efforts in expanding health care in our province are reflected in our surgical capacity reaching new heights. More than 100,000 surgeries and procedures were completed in 2025-26, exceeding provincial targets and reducing wait times. Nearly 92 per cent of surgeries were finished within eight months. Additional investments are expanding surgical volumes, supporting robot-assisted procedures, and improving care for patients requiring back surgery and pain management. To learn more, visit Saskatchewan's Surgical Performance and Wait Times web page.
In line with expanding care in our province, work to enhance mental health and addictions care continues with the passage of The Compassionate Intervention Act. This legislation creates a structured framework that allows involuntary addictions treatment for individuals in the most severe stages of substance use disorder who are unable to seek help on their own. The Act outlines clear pathways for assessment, ensures free legal representation, and supports the opening of Saskatchewan’s first Compassionate Intervention Assessment Centre and an involuntary inpatient unit in North Battleford. Regulations are being finalized ahead of the Act coming into force this fall. Information is available at saskatchewan.ca/compassionate-intervention.
Work on creating dynamic training and employment opportunities for students continues for our government. Our government will support development of the new BHP Technical Training Centre in Humboldt with a multi-million-dollar investment in partnership with BHP and Carlton Trail College. The new centre will expand Carlton Trail College's existing campus, helping train the next generation of skilled workers and delivering lasting economic benefits across the region. Renovations will begin this summer, with the facility expected to be fully open in fall 2027.
In addition, our government has increased funding by $534,000 to the Trades and Skills Centres in Saskatoon and Regina, bringing the total investment to $3.5 million. This increase will fund three additional programs at both Trades and Skills Centres. Our government is making targeted investments to protect our workforce in the province. Investments into the Regina and Saskatoon Trades and Skills Center help Saskatchewan employers fill the skilled jobs being created by our strong and growing economy.
Saskatchewan is moving forward with confidence. Strong economic performance, expanded supports in areas that matter most to the people of Saskatchewan, and new training opportunities are helping build a province where every resident can succeed.
