Wildfires: State of Emergency

Due to the wildfires affecting communities across Saskatchewan, today Premier Scott Moe, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA), declared a provincial State of Emergency.

As of this morning, there are 17 active wildfires in Saskatchewan and 15 communities have evacuated. To date this year, there have been 206 wildfires, well above the five-year average of 125.

This declaration provides enhanced powers to the Minister and SPSA that may be required to help address this unprecedented start of the fire season. The province does not take the exercise of these powers lightly, but they are necessary to enhance public safety. The state of emergency will be in effect for 30 days and can be extended if necessary.

The SPSA has committed to providing daily updates on the current wildfire situation to ensure that Saskatchewan residents are provided with the most up to date information.

Saskatchewan’s Global Nuclear Energy Leadership

Saskatchewan continues to be an exporter of choice internationally. Goods from our province reached 161 countries in 2024.

Last week, Minister of Crown Investments Corporation and Minister Responsible for SaskPower Jeremy Harrison led a delegation to Poland to attend the World Nuclear Supply Chain Conference. The mission deepened Saskatchewan's ties with international nuclear industry stakeholders and showcased the province's advantages in enhancing energy security around the world.

Minister Harrison spoke at the conference to highlight the significant role Saskatchewan will play in the expanding global outlook for nuclear energy. The delegation also met with government officials, utility companies, energy suppliers, manufacturers and new industry entrants, to explore potential opportunities for collaboration and profile Saskatchewan's strengths.

Northern Saskatchewan is home to the world's largest high-grade uranium deposits. The province produces 100 per cent of Canada's uranium and is the second largest uranium producer in the world. In 2024, Saskatchewan hit record production and export sales of uranium, valued at $2.6 billion.

Economic Growth and Entrepreneurial Support

The provincial economy continues to see substantial growth. In 2007, the value of Saskatchewan exports was $19.8 billion, which has since climbed to nearly $50 billion on average over the past three years.

Statistics Canada's latest GDP numbers indicate that Saskatchewan's 2024 real GDP reached an all-time high of $80.5 billion, increasing by $2.6 billion, or 3.4 per cent from 2023. This places Saskatchewan second in the nation for real GDP growth and above the national average of 1.6 per cent.

The Saskatchewan Young Entrepreneurs Bursary applications are now open, supporting business sustainability and growth across the province. Minister of Trade and Export Development Warren Kaeding, along with Saskatchewan Chamber CEO Prabha Ramaswamy have launched the new Young Entrepreneur Bursary. This bursary will support up to 57 local young entrepreneurs with bursaries of $5,000 to foster business development.

Our government is committed to fostering a competitive business environment where all businesses can succeed through: low tax rates, reduced red tape and streamlined regulations. This promotes growth and innovation that enhances the quality of life for people across the province.

Saskatchewan's retail sector continues to show strong performance, with an 8.2 per cent year-over-year increase in retail trade sales from March 2024 to March 2025 (seasonally adjusted). This places Saskatchewan second in the nation.

Private capital investment in Saskatchewan increased last year by 17.3 per cent to $14.7 billion, ranking first among provinces. Private capital investment is projected to reach $16.2 billion in 2025, an increase of 10.1 per cent over 2024. This is the second highest anticipated percentage increase among the provinces.

Saskatchewan's building construction growth leads the country. Statistics Canada numbers this week show an increase of 27.8 per cent in March 2025 compared to March 2024 for building construction investment in the province. This places Saskatchewan first in Canada. Residential and non-residential building construction increased 29.8 per cent and 24.2 per cent respectively for March 2025 compared to March 2024.

New Physician Recruitment Campaign Underway

A physician recruitment advertising campaign with the slogan "Saskatchewan is Calling" has been launched by the Government of Saskatchewan in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Saskatchewan Healthcare Recruitment Agency.

The campaign features practicing physicians based in North Battleford, Saskatoon and Swift Current, showcasing their work environments and how they spend their personal time. In their own words, they share why Saskatchewan is a great choice to build a successful medical practice and enjoy a high quality of life as a physician.

Spring Seeding 88% Complete

Producers made significant progress again this week, with seeding now 88 per cent complete in Saskatchewan. This is ahead of the five-year average of 82 per cent and the 10-year average of 85 per cent. Topsoil moisture is showing some slight decline due to warm windy conditions.

The southwest is the furthest advanced in seeding progress at 95 per cent complete. This is followed closely by the west-central region at 94 per cent, the northwest region at 93 per cent and the northeast region at 92 per cent. The east-central and southeast regions are the furthest behind at 81 per cent and 80 per cent respectively. Most producers anticipate that seeding will wrap up within the next week if weather permits. Producers are also busy moving cattle to pasture, spraying and land rolling.

As producers continue with seeding and field work operations, they are encouraged to take safety precautions in all the work that they do. The Farm Stress Line can help by providing support for producers toll free at 1-800-667-4442.
